About Us

Maidstone & District Riding Club was founded over 60 years ago in 1948, with the aim of encouraging riding in the area. Instruction was offered at working rallies; the club ran shows and social events and outside visits. In the 1980’s the club’s annual show was a major event offering qualifiers for the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley – now we usually run more frequent but smaller competitions tailored to our members needs.

The Club is affiliated to the British Horse Society and so is run under the rules of British Riding Clubs. We are active members of our BRC Area 10 and send teams to compete at most qualifiers. Most years we have members qualifying for and competing at Riding Club National Championships. In 2009 our team won the Riding Clubs Team SJ at Kent County Show. Recently we have also hosted the Area 10 Quiz – a chance to test our equestrian knowledge - and we run a very popular Wine & Wisdom evening in the Spring.

Our members range from juniors to senior citizens, from those building confidence to others out there competing in affiliated disciplines – there is something for everyone, whatever size or type of horse or pony.

Activities are held around our area often using facilities offered by members but we also hire XC venues and indoor schools, as needed. For those with a competitive streak we have members-only dressage & combined training series & fun SJ days.

Our Club also offers lesser-known disciplines, such as TREC – we run training and in 2009 hosted a very successful 2-day competition at Chilham Castle with riders from all over the country.

Our social rides are also very popular: these are sometimes held on Camber beach, or might start at a member’s home with good hacking. Depending on the weather and the time of year, these may start with a stirrup cup or finish with fish & chips.

Our ‘Quadrilles from Scratch’ run at Street Farm, Burham, have also proved to be a new way of having fun with your horse – in one hour we put together and perform a short musical ride. This year we put on a polished performance for the 80th birthday of Peggy Skinner, one of our founder members and now our President.

"In 2009, we put on a polished performance for the 80th birthday of Peggy Skinner, one of our founder members and now our President.

A new venture for 2009 was a sponsored ride – Ride for Life – with a pink theme, in aid of Cancer Research, starting at Manor Farm, Chartway Street, which is also the venue for some of our shows."
